Savannah River National Laboratory Establishes First Joint Appointment with University of Notre Dame
Savannah River National Laboratory established its first joint appointment with University of Notre Dame and Associate Professor Amy Hixon.
Hixon’s research focuses on understanding and quantifying the behavior of actinide elements in natural and engineering systems in three key areas: 1) environmental radiochemistry; 2) chemical and physical properties of nuclear materials; and 3) synthesis and characterization of novel plutonium compounds. Hixon will collaborate with SRNL on actinide research projects.
“I’m excited to formalize my research collaboration with SRNL, which started when I was a graduate student intern 17 years ago,” said Hixon.
“The naming of Professor Amy Hixon as a joint appointee marks the first joint appointment between SRNL and the University of Notre Dame, said Elizabeth Hoffman, director, SRNL Innovation and University Engagement. “This appointment will strengthen engagement with the University of Notre Dame to further research associated with public health and safety, as well as national energy security.”
SRNL’s Joint Appointment Program provides university faculty opportunities to engage in research and development addressing the nation’s challenges in energy, science, national security and environmental stewardship. Joint appointees serve as a bridge between their university, SRNL researchers and students to deliver the future workforce for SRNL and the Department of Energy.
