Aiken, S.C. – Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) officially opened its Critical Infrastructure, Industrial Control System Cybersecurity Laboratory at the Georgia Cyber Center in downtown Augusta, Georgia.
The new laboratory at the Georgia Cyber Center is the first physical presence for SRNL in the state of Georgia. It is part of SRNL’s hub-and-spoke strategy to leverage its primary cybersecurity laboratory at the Savannah River Site with external capabilities and institutions to maximize its cybersecurity collaboration ecosystem.
“With the Georgia Cyber Center hosting numerous government, industry and academic institutions that SRNL has relationships with, it made perfect sense to pursue a presence there,” said SRNL Laboratory Director Dr. Vahid Majidi. “SRNL’s ability to conduct research and development in an innovative and collaborative environment with a full spectrum of partners opens up many opportunities to include cybersecurity solutions to enhance the resiliency of the national grid, training for soldiers, medical industry cybersecurity challenges, and a host of other challenges confronting our nation.”
The new laboratory will allow SRNL to seamlessly interact with key partners, such as Army Cyber Command, the Defense Digital Service of the Department of Defense, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Cyber Crime Center, Augusta University School of Computer and Cyber Sciences, Augusta Technical College, and numerous cybersecurity industry leaders.
“We are very excited to have Savannah River National Laboratory join the growing ecosystem at the Georgia Cyber Center,” said Michael Shaffer, executive vice president, Strategic Partnerships and Economic Development, Augusta University. “Working collaboratively with Savannah River National Laboratory will provide benefits that will reach across South Carolina, Georgia and the nation.”
SRNL will occupy space on the fifth floor of the Hull McKnight Building. Initially, eight members of the SRNL cybersecurity team will conduct research alongside invited research partners at the new lab.
