September 3, 2024

Aiken, S.C. (Sep. 03, 2024) – Savannah River National Laboratory and Antares Nuclear, Inc. entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement to advance technology development related to the deployment and utilization of small reactor-based power systems.

Under the CRADA, SRNL and Antares will collaborate on areas such as fuel cycle management, modular facility deployment, specialized engineering, and security considerations to enable these systems to provide resilient power to critical U.S. infrastructure and special purpose applications.

Antares is a multi-disciplinary nuclear technology company focused on building rapidly deployable microreactors for critical U.S. Department of Defense mission enablement. SRNL possesses unique competencies and capabilities unavailable in the domestic private sector related to the deployment and operation of nuclear systems and processes. The joint expertise of SRNL and Antares will help accelerate the deployment of microreactors to serve the national defense and commercial applications.

“Part of our role as a national lab is to support industry partners in efforts to mature their technologies and ultimately contribute to their successful implementation,” said Bill Bates, deputy associate lab director, Environmental and Legacy Management. “We are very pleased to be involved in developing solutions to these technical challenges and we look forward to our collaboration with the Antares team.”

Of the announcement, Antares CEO Jordan Bramble said, “Antares is thrilled to formalize our partnership with Savannah River National Laboratory to accelerate the deployment of microreactors to meet critical commercial and defense energy requirements. Together, we’ll work to address critical operational energy needs, from domestic natural disaster response to preparedness for U.S. forces and installation power at austere locations.”
