Dr. Robert Sindelar Receives Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research
Aiken, S.C. – Dr. Robert (Bob) Sindelar, was recognized on Tuesday, May 18, with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research for 2021. The award honors an individual or team within the state whose achievements and contributions to science in South Carolina merit special recognition, to promote wider awareness of the quality and extent of scientific activity in South Carolina.
The award recognizes Dr. Sindelar’s scientific research excellence as well as his contributions to teaching and service. The proclamation received from the Governor of South Carolina reads, “He is a highly respected scientist with an impressive record of research accomplishments. He has helped expand our state’s research competencies and increase its visibility within the national and international scientific communities.”
Dr. Sindelar earned his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1985. In 1986, he accepted a research engineering position at the Savannah River Laboratory where he now is a Consulting Engineer and Laboratory Fellow. He is a leading international expert in nuclear materials science and technology in the fields of aging effects and aging management of structures, and in applications of materials in nuclear systems.
“Bob is the ideal example of service and commitment to the Savannah River National Laboratory and the country,” Dr. Vahid Majidi, Laboratory Director shared. “He has served the scientific community through his work at the Savannah River Site for more than thirty-five years. We are proud that he has received such an honorable recognition from Governor Henry McMaster.”
The “Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science” is sponsored by the Governor’s office and the South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA). Currently four awards are given annually. They are Excellence in Scientific Research (ESR); Excellence in Scientific Awareness (ESA); Young Scientist Award for Excellence in Scientific Research (YESR); Excellence in Scientific Research at a Predominately Undergraduate Institution (ESPUI).
